India Alerts Pakistan About High Flood Levels

India has released additional water into the Sutlej River, sparking fears of worsening floods in Pakistan. According to reports, the Indian High Commission has formally informed Pakistan about high flood levels at two locations on the Sutlej.

The Ministry of Water Resources has issued an emergency alert to all concerned departments, warning of extremely high flood risks at Harike and Ferozepur. Authorities have been instructed to remain on high alert, make arrangements for evacuation of vulnerable populations, and ensure safety measures in flood-prone areas.

Over 4 Million People Affected in Punjab

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) has revealed that floods have already caused devastation across Punjab.

  • Affected Villages: 4,100

  • Total Affected Population: 4.15 million

  • Deaths Reported: 56 (since August 26)

  • Relief Camps Established: 425

  • Medical Camps Established: 500 (treated 175,000 people so far)

  • Rescued & Relocated People: 2.07 million

  • Livestock Rescued: 1.52 million

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia confirmed these figures while speaking to media, emphasizing the scale of the humanitarian challenge.

Situation in Multan and Surrounding Areas

Multan Deputy Commissioner Waseem Hameed Sindhu stated that the district administration has prepared an action plan to deal with the incoming flood surge from Head Trimmu.

  • At present, water levels at Head Muhammadwala and Shershah flood embankments are decreasing, reducing pressure on protective dykes.

  • However, a water flow of 543,000 cusecs is expected to reach Multan within 36 hours from Head Trimmu.

  • Once this wave arrives, water levels at Muhammadwala, Bosan, and Shershah embankments may rise again.

  • Authorities expect the intensity of flow to decrease slightly before reaching Muhammadwala.

Head Punjnad Reaching Full Capacity

DG PDMA Punjab Irfan Kathia further warned that Head Punjnad is likely to reach or exceed its full capacity of 600,000 cusecs within 24 hours. He also cautioned about widespread heavy rains across different parts of the province.

  • Flood conditions in Multan may persist for the next 72 hours, as more water continues to arrive from upstream.

  • At Shershah Bridge, the water level has dropped only three inches, meaning that once Trimmu’s water arrives, the flood situation will remain severe.

Floodwaters Moving Toward Sindh

The flood surge is now moving downstream toward Sindh.

  • At Head Punjnad, water is expected to rise between 600,000 to 650,000 cusecs in the next 24 hours.

  • Within three days, this water will reach Kot Mithan, merging into the Indus River.

  • From there, it will pass through Rajanpur and
, eventually entering Sindh at Guddu Barrage, where the water level could reach 750,000 to 800,000 cusecs.

Authorities on High Alert

Authorities have urged all departments to remain on full alert, ensure timely evacuation of residents from vulnerable areas, and provide medical assistance and relief supplies to affected populations.

The situation remains highly critical as both the Sutlej River and downstream Indus regions brace for heavy floodwaters in the coming days.
