No Change in Political Ideology
Defense Minister Khawaja Asif has clarified that former Prime Minister Mian Nawaz Sharif is fully in favor of the continuation of the current system of governance. While the timing of implementing political ideologies may vary, it is incorrect to claim that Nawaz Sharif has abandoned his political philosophy.
Speaking in a program on Geo News, Khawaja Asif rejected the notion that Nawaz Sharif had distanced himself from his core ideology. He emphasized:
“Our direction has been set; we need to move forward without hesitation.”
Murree Meeting: Misreporting by Media
The Defense Minister revealed that during the Murree meeting, the issue of continuity was never even discussed. According to him, Nawaz Sharif believes in strengthening governance, not in reviving past slogans.
“This is not the time for the slogan ‘Respect the Vote’, but rather for effective governance,” Asif stated.
He criticized the media for misreporting and highlighted that journalists were not even aware of who attended the meeting.
Political Ideology Remains Intact
Khawaja Asif stressed that the essence of Nawaz Sharif’s political ideology remains unchanged. Practical implementation of certain principles may sometimes be delayed or advanced due to circumstances, but this does not mean a shift in ideology.
Successes and Setbacks of the Past
Reflecting on the past, he said:
During Nawaz Sharif’s third tenure, economic reforms, road infrastructure, CPEC projects, and exchange rate stability were progressing successfully.
However, the government’s premature end was a result of a predetermined agenda.
He claimed that if the then establishment had been properly managed, Nawaz Sharif would have completed his five-year term, and Pakistan’s political situation would be entirely different today.
Current Government’s Priorities
Khawaja Asif highlighted the main objectives of the present government:
Stabilizing the economy
Ensuring strong foreign policy
Managing relations with India carefully to avoid the mistakes of the past
He underlined that the government does not want to repeat old confrontations but instead wants to pursue clear, future-oriented policies.
Discussion with Shehbaz Sharif
The Defense Minister also mentioned that he spoke with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in the evening about these matters. “If he wishes to object to my statement, he is free to do so,” he added.
